Restore Your Damaged Teeth with Porcelain Crowns in Edmonton

When damage to your teeth is extreme and beyond repair, we can use porcelain crowns to restore healthy appearance of your teeth. Many of the patients visit our dental office to address cracked, chipped, damaged or decayed teeth. At Saddleback Dental Centre, we offer a wide variety of cosmetic dentistry procedures to help improve the look and feel of your smile. But, we believe that our porcelain crowns in Edmonton provide an effective way to restore your seamless smile.

Our dental crowns are used as an alternative to veneers to cover your discoloured tooth. Crowns cover more of the tooth than veneers. We use modern technology to precisely match the shape and colour of your natural tooth. In addition to other cosmetic benefits, they can actually work to strengthen the structure of your tooth, restore the integrity of your bite, and overall health of your mouth.

Some of the reasons why you might need a tooth crown include:

  • Discoloured or decayed tooth
  • Chipped or cracked tooth
  • Extensive broken down fillings
  • Tooth with poor size and shape

Porcelain Dental Crown Procedure

One of our dentists at Saddleback Dental Centre will work closely with you to discuss your needs and goals. Later, we will determine if the porcelain crowns are the proper treatment for you. At the first visit, we will prepare your tooth for the dental crown to fit properly in your mouth. Once any decay or damage is treated, an impression of your teeth and gums is made and sent to the lab for crown fabrication. On your second visit, we will remove the temporary crowns and permanently bond your new crowns onto your tooth.

Types of Dental Crowns Available at Saddleback Dental Centre

  • Metal crowns – gold alloy, palladium, nickel alloy or chromium alloy; ideal for use on the back teeth because they provide more flexibility to accommodate biting and chewing.
  • Ceramic crowns – very natural looking and they are ideal for use on front teeth.
  • Porcelain crowns – very natural looking; they are stronger than ceramic crowns.

A Little Extra Caution Will Keep Your Crown Protected

After getting your porcelain crowns placed onto your teeth, keep in mind that maintenance of crowns is not much different than normal dental care, although you should be a little more cautious than usual. To prevent damage or fracturing, you should avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard items. Grinding will also affect the integrity of the crown.

It is also important to clean between your teeth when you have a crown. Floss or interdental cleaners such as special brushes and sticks are important tools to remove plaque from the crown area where the gum meets the tooth. Plaque in that area can cause decay and gum disease.
